It was chilly Christmas evening at Yokohama Port in 1968 when my parents set feet the first time on Japanese soil. They had no idea that Japan would be their home for the next 40 years. They settled in the port city of Kobe and I was born next summer in Tokyo. I would be living in this country for at least 20 years and it would be part of my identity, my story and my destiny.

My parents spent the first two years at a Japanese language school learning to read, write, speak and behave like a Japanese. My nanny was Suzuki-san who took care of me during the classes. She was like my Japanese mom and I adopted the basis of Japaneseness from her. It became part of our family culture and made us to speak mixed Finnish and Japanese with each other for the decades to come.

It took few years and I got one sister and four brothers. We went to the local kindergarden and preschool, got bunch of Japanese friends and finally though that we were Japanese as well. The first trip abroad to Finland was a shock. I was five and I realized that I'm not Japanese but not Finnish either. I was multipotentialite Third Culture Kid, I had hybrid identity and it would define also my career. I would be transfering intelligence between diverse cultures, communities, domains and industries.

Today I'm enthustiastic serial entrepreneur, husband and a father of two children. I have adequate understanding of myself, I'm aware where I'm coming from, I do have decent hunch where I'm going to and I'm getting deeper with this awareness day by day. The key element of happy life to me is the understanding of my identity - to accept myself, know my roots and embrace my story, whatever it is.

People can be divided to two major groups depending on how they build career and increase competence. Career Orientation Chart illustrates these groups with vertical and horizontal dimensions where silo illustrates one industry or domain.

The first group identify themselves with one silo. These people move vertically within the chosen silo by deepening the knowledge and personal competence. The goal is to get as deep as possible and become an expert of the silo, to be the best available tool, kind of Japanese chef knife and solve one specific challenge. Vertical Silo model represents traditional way of working and it makes sense. It is easy to comprehend, communicate and control.

The second group identifies themselves with various silos and they operate horizontally between them. The knowledge, competence and skills acquired are often more shallow in each silo but in bigger picture the range is more diverse. In this Horizontal Flow model the goal is to be a versatile tool, like a Swiss army knife and agilely solve multiple challenges simultaneously. Diverse intelligence from various silos is combined in the way that allows distruptive ideas and innovations to emerge more likely.

What type of person are you? I belong to the second group and here are the silos where I'm operating - within and in between.

Vertical Silo model represents traditional way of working and it makes sense for most of people. It is easy to comprehend, communicate and control.

HORIZONTAL FLOW

The second group identifies themselves with various silos and the focus is on horizontal flow between them. The knowledge, competence and skills acquired are often more shallow in each silo but the range is more diverse in bigger picture. In this Horizontal Flow model the goal is to be a versatile tool, like a Swiss Army Knife and be able to solve multiple challenge themes simultaneously and agilely. Diverse intelligence from various silos is combined in the way that allows distruptive ideas and innovations to emerge more likely.

What type of person are you? In everyday life we all represent the Horizontal Flow and utilize the diverse knowledge and experience gained through our lives, purposefully or unconsciously. Nevertheless utilizing the versatile knowledge and experience in working life has not been traditionally supported. Could you imagine how people would react in the meeting if farming principles were offered as a solution to information technology problems. Why not if they would work! The startup scene has changed the working life mindset drastically in last decade and Horizontal Flow is becoming the second status quo alongside the Vertical Silo model.

 

I have been doing my best through my whole career to be good in horizontal flow and to be involved to the silos I'm passionate about. My goal has been to utilize the gained holistic intelligence consciously and enrich the outcome for the benefit of myself, for my loved ones and obviously for my clients as well.
